BACKGROUND
The story of Harry Potter lives on! Almost two decades following the events of J.K. Rowling’s last novel in the Harry Potter series titled Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, here comes another spectacular adventure featuring a brand new story and new characters! Harry POtter and the Cursed Child was written by British playwright Jack Thorne based on the story by J.K. Rowling and John Tiffany. The play opened in London’s West End in 2016 and successfully mounted a magnificent run at the Palace Theatre. The production also secured numerous prestigious nominations, with a record breaking 11 nods at the Laurence Olivier Awards, winning a total of nine, another record breaking feat.
In 2023, the production premiered on Broadway and has reportedly sold over 3.5 million tickets so far. Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is considered the highest grossing non musical production ever in Broadway history. The overall production in London and New York has sold over 14 million tickets.
PLOT
Two decades after the massive battle between Harry Potter and his friends against Voldemort and his Death Eaters and dementors, Harry Potter is now the head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement at the Ministry of Magic. His son Albus Severus Potter is about to enter Hogwarts for the first time. However, being in the shadow of his famous father, Albus struggles to find his own identity. Often compared to his dad, who’s a talented wizard, he can’t help but feel the pressure. Meanwhile, during the sorting hat ceremony, Albus was sorted into Slytherin, instead of Gryffindor like his dad Harry. In addition, Albus befriends a boy named Scorpius Malfoy, the son of Harry’s archnemesis Draco Malfoy. Albus and Scorpious now find themselves in dire and dangerous situations, including getting their hands on a more dangerous version of the time turner. CREATIVE TEAM
The team led by director John Tiffany brought this magnificent epic to life with the help of amazing designers and orchestrators. The magical world of Harry Potter has been brought to the stage thanks to set designer Christine Jones, costume designer, Katrina Lindsay, and lighting designer Neil Austin. Meanwhile, the authenticity and magical vibes were totally authentic, close to what the book and film represented with the help of movement director Steve Hoggett and illusions and magic designer Jamie Harrison. Lastly, the play has been given much depth thanks to music from Imogen Heap and sound designer Gareth Fry. The play earned a ton of amazing accolades for its major productions. In London, the play won nine Laurence Olivier Awards, including Best New Play. Over at WhatsOnStage Awards, the production brought home eight awards.
